Sunday Dinner Popup - jULY 11 - art-is-in

Curbalicious is excited to announce our next Sunday Popup with Chef Kevin Mathieson, Co-Owner of Art-Is-In Bakery of Ottawa.

SUNDAY DINNER POPUP

July 11, 2021

Kevin has loved cooking, baking and making pastries all of his life—and it shows. Now, as the owner of Art Is In Bakery, which has grown into one of the top foodie destinations in the nation’s capital, everything Kevin touches becomes a piece of art.

Part of his approach to making beautiful food involves travelling widely to visit professional kitchens around the world—everything from hole-in-the-wall taco joints, to far flung food trucks, to Michelin-starred restaurants. He makes sure he is always learning and researching—always finding new ways to coax the most deliciousness out of even the simplest ingredients.

Kevin grew up in Winnipeg and worked as a cook at the Fort Garry Hotel. When he entered a local pastry competition and beat the hotel’s pastry chef, it set him off on a new path—a life dedicated to doing what he loves. He was able to work at some of the best bakeries in the world including Ladurée and Fauchon in Paris, the Patisserie Canet in Monaco and Steiner bakery in Zurich. He learned classic French techniques and continued to practice and hone his craft, finding ways to give it his own spin. Moving to New York City, he eventually became the head pastry chef for the acclaimed Chef Francois Payard and was able to learn bread baking from one of the best bakers in America, Roger Gural.

From there Kevin moved to Ottawa where he worked in restaurants. At the same time, his sourdough obsession grew, and he began experimenting with natural leavening and poolish in his baking. His most exciting experiment led to a sensational slow-fermented bread that he brushed with olive oil and seasoned with sea salt and various fresh ingredients, like herbs and olives. “Dynamite” has become his signature bread at Art Is In Bakery, where the locals continue to flock for his full menu of morning pastries, specialty sandwiches, homemade soups, gourmet burgers, Vermont-inspired sourdough pizzas and more.

Kevin and his wife Stephanie started Art-is-in Bakery together back in 2006,  always trying to make the Bakery a better place every day. With Stephanie’s extensive background of restaurant management, working in Paris and many fine establishments in Ottawa, she learnt strong employee management skills. Along with having the restaurant industry in her blood, Kevin and Stephanie are a perfect match together.
